James Gunn had all the necessary details established in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, making it easy for him to align Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with his original vision. The sequel focuses on Peter Quill as he struggles to come to terms with his father, Ego, a Celestial who aims to rebuild the universe. Yondu, who previously kidnapped Peter but has always protected him in silence, also deals with fatherhood issues in the film.

While Ayesha, the leader of Sovereign, serves as a secondary antagonist, most of the conflicts in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arise from Ego’s villainous actions. Nebula becomes their prisoner and must choose between loyalty to Thanos or betraying him, Rocket struggles with his role in the team, and tension between Peter and Gamora continues to rise.

Despite the team’s internal conflicts, James Gunn’s ultimate goal was to unite the Guardians as a family with newfound strength. This is achieved through the introduction of Nebula and Mantis, and Yondu’s self-sacrifice to save Peter. Ego is defeated, and the post-credits scene hints at the appearance of Adam Warlock, setting the stage for the future of the Guardians and their role in Infinity War. As the third movie in the series, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will continue their journey.

Given their close connection to Thanos as the adoptive father of Gamora and Nebula, it was no surprise that the Guardians of the Galaxy appeared in the blockbuster films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and played an important role in both.

After saving Thor’s life, the Guardians became unwittingly embroiled in the Infinity War to prevent Thanos from wiping out half the universe’s population. While Groot, Rocket, and Thor joined the battle on Earth to protect the Mind Stone, the rest of the team plotted to assassinate Thanos before he could collect all the other stones. However, their plan failed and Gamora met a tragic end on Vormir, leaving Peter Quill reeling with emotion.

On Titan, the Guardians teamed up with Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange to take on Thanos, but Peter’s emotional outburst led to their defeat and the loss of the Time Stone, bringing Thanos one step closer to his goal. After the snap, only Rocket and Nebula survived.

In Endgame, Rocket and Nebula joined forces with the Avengers to locate and destroy Thanos, in order to prevent any further tragedies. They participated in a time travel plan to reverse the snap, which brought about unexpected consequences, including the arrival of the 2014 version of Gamora. After Thanos was defeated, Gamora remained in the present timeline, and may continue to accompany the Guardians in future adventures.

Following their breakup with Thor in Love and Thunder, the Guardians of the Galaxy make a return in a new Disney+ short film called Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, directed by James Gunn. The project serves as a gentle Christmas welcome for 2022 and an opportunity for Gunn to deepen the relationships between certain members of the team.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special focuses on Drax and Mantis, who journey back to Earth in search of the perfect Christmas gift for Peter Quill. The gift is based on his favorite ’80s icon, Kevin Bacon, and his role in Footloose. Meanwhile, Peter and the rest of the Guardians set up their new base of operations in Knowhere after the events of the Thanos battle.

Although it is a lighthearted work designed for entertainment, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special still contains valuable details that contribute to the overall MCU storyline. First, the movie confirms Peter and Mantis as half-siblings. Second, the Guardians welcome a new member, the dog Cosmo the Spacedog (voiced by Maria Bakalova). Finally, the film explores Peter’s pain following Gamora’s death and the new Gamora’s memory loss, which is an important detail leading up to the third Guardians film.
